Job Description :: Director of Communications and Operations
West Hills Covenant Church is located in SW Portland, Oregon. West Hills is an intentionally intergenerational family of faith with a vibrant and growing commitment to diversity and racial justice. We are looking for someone with an authentic love for Jesus, who is passionate about our vision and values, to lead us in creating, organizing, planning and implementing effective internal and external communication and strategies for/with the church, and who can also build and manage some of our internal systems and structures.

It is essential that all of our staff are passionate champions of who we are and who we are hoping to become. This is the general Vision and Mission we have been using over the last 3-4 years. More recently, we began a process of discerning our values to become more clear of who we sense God is calling us to become. Eventually, we will re-work our vision and mission to reflect our values.

SPECIFIC SKILLS NEEDED
Leadership: Big-picture planner, ministry partner, and motivated team player. Work with pastors/leadership to implement communication strategies. Provide leadership and management in the area of external/internal communications and marketing through all mediums. Manage the overall strategic plan for community engagement. Must be astute, competent, and sensitive to the intergenerational and increasingly multiethnic nature of our church and community.
Creativity/Storytelling: Continually look for ways to communicate existing church-wide ministry programs to fully integrate the congregation and the wider community with West Hills Covenant Church through print, video, online, and verbal announcements. Stay current with creative communication and technological trends; look for opportunities to streamline communication processes for effectiveness.
Strategic/Planning: Think well of how to execute the vision, mission, values of West Hills Covenant Church. Organize communication in a way that best reflects church priorities and establishes structures that seek to include all people. Attention to detail, ability to multitask, and deadline-oriented planning and execution are skills highly required. Able to analyze complex problems and recommend appropriate solutions. Able to assess, problem solve, improve and create operational systems.
Organizational/Administrative: Self-starter with the ability to prioritize requests, multi-task, and manage multiple projects. Experience using, managing and championing accurate database systems. Accurate record keeping of all reports, records, files, manuals, etc.
Interpersonal/Communication: Possess excellent written and oral communication skills. Manage the creation of weekly update, bulletin, and PowerPoint announcements. Relate well to all kinds of people by listening, learning, negotiating and educating. Collaborate well with other ministries. Develop and maintain a creative, comprehensive and effective system to communicate church activities and ministry with church attendees and the local community. Field inquiries from external vendors and visitors.
Writing/Design: Strong writing, editing, proofreading skills. An understanding of social media strategies and basic design principles using various software and a working knowledge or capability of learning basic software and word processing programs.
Collaborate with pastors/leadership to develop communication processes and define priorities to oversee and lead all communications clearly, creatively, and effectively.
Oversee all facility management (i.e. events, renters, vendors, daily oversight, emergency plan, contracts, checks, and act as liaison to the insurance company)
Communicate regularly with Co-Senior Pastors to understand the themes of weekly services and overall direction of the church ministry.
Engage in our staff community as an active partner in fulfilling our church’s vision and mission.
Create clear systems that articulate specific ways church attendees can belong.
Serve as the “face” and manager of the office and administration of the church.
Facilitate and manage the church software programs.
Training for staff/leaders and maintenance of administration protocols.
Organize and archive all records and documents.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in communications (i.e. design, journalism, marketing), ministry, management, and leadership field preferred.
A personal, devoted, and growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
A minimum of 2 years experience in leading, creating communications for a broad community and managing office operations and/or facilities.
Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Proven capability to lead, envision, create, recruit, and execute ideas to fruition.
Hospitable spirit to all people
Ability to lead engaging communication that reflects the diversity of our WHCC community and enriches us with some of the diverse expressions of God’s global and historic Church.
Willingness to learn and engage with conversations around justice, race, class, and gender.
Demonstrated competency in technical software such as: Word Processing, Planning Center, ProPresenter, Mailchimp, Squarespace, Social Media.
Experience with Adobe Illustrator, Canva or similar applications.
Theological alignment with the Evangelical Covenant Church.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a team.
Reliable, Available, Teachable.
Self-aware and other-aware.
Good sense of humor.
Hours and Compensation
The position is .75 FTE (30-35 hours per week), reports to one of the Senior Pastors.
Position will be compensated at $35,000-40,000/year depending on experience.
