Tuesday Night Old Testament Class with Hans Blom
Old Testament class on Leviticus, Tuesday nights - 7:15-9:15 in the Library
On September 9 we will begin an in-depth study of the book of Leviticus. For most people the idea of studying Leviticus is enough to make them roll their eyes and mutter, "Why?" we cannot dismiss this book so easily Leviticus teaches us that the LORD expects his people, and especially the priests, to walk before him in holiness and obedience. In Lev. 19:2 the LORD commands Israel, "Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy." To make this possible for Israel the LORD gave them the Law as a guide for practicing "holy living" before their holy and righteous God.
The New Testament, teaches us that Christians are "a royal priesthood," i.e. we are a priesthood of believers (I Pet. 2:9) and applies the LORD's command to us, saying, "Just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy I Pet. 1:16 .'" We need to carefully study the book of Leviticus, because the guiding principles we draw from it will help us to practice "holy living." Furthermore we will discover that, like Israel, in trying to do so we are likely to fail bitterly. But we will find that Leviticus is also very much about God's love and grace, which He readily bestows on a needy and sinful people.
